Plastic Parts to Replace OEM Part in Food Processing


The turned plastic component featured in the image is for a food processing client. The client approach Partwell engineers as they have worked with us on many projects to date, all of which are for OEM parts that they would like to purchase in lower volumes than the original manufacturer will permit.

They needed the plastic part machining very quickly, the total turnaround time for quotation, drawing approval and the lathe machining was just 3 days. The lead time for the OEM plastic parts was over four weeks as they had to be imported; thus supporting the local Lancashire manufacturing industry.

Machined Plastic Part Criteria:

  1. Suitable for contact with food.
  2. The plastic part would be working on a machine that operates at a high heat; therefore the machined plastic component would have to withstand heats of up to 100°C.
  3. Suitable for the client’s food processing factory that is a very damp environment, it was essential that the plastic grade used would not be affected by this.

Why CNC Lathe PETP?

  1. PETP plastic sheet is fully approved for food contact.
  2. It will withstand high operating temperatures, up to 120°C long term and up to 170°C short term.
  3. PETP has good dimensional stability and low moisture absorption properties, therefore the performance of the machined plastic parts will not be affected by the clients’ damp environment.
